The Spirit Bear is a rare subspecies of the North American Black Bear and found only in The Great Bear Rainforest on Canada’s Pacific Coast. Their unusual colouration has been passed down through generations and is the result of a single, rare gene mutation.
Logging, mining and fishing are affecting their habitat and disrupting the balance of their ecosystem. The mature cedar trees that they use for hibernating and giving birth are threatened by a lack of adequate logging guidelines. Fewer salmon has led to Grizzly Bears moving in and chasing the smaller Spirit Bears away from prime fishing spots.
